This weapon is a .54 smoothbore with an 8.50 inch round barrel and a brass blade front sight.
The wood stock is in excellent condition. It has a smooth semi-bright and clean surface with only minor scratches from use and storage. There are no chips or cracks. The side opposite the lock has two crisp cartouche marks. The barrel is bright as issued and is marked with a “US” over “WN” over a “P” at the breech. Barrel date is “1852” and marking is strong. The bolster retains the original nipple which shows only light wear. The ramrod is attached to the barrel by a swivel. Both the ramrod and the swivel are bright to match the barrel. Overall the barrel surface has very light scattered mottling and some minor scratches around the barrel band and breech.
All the furniture on the pistol is brass. The single barrel band with integral escutcheon is brass as is the trigger guard and butt-cap and spine. The latter does exhibit some wear and light scratches. The lock and hammer are bright with light mottling to match the other iron surfaces. The lock is marked forward of the hammer with “US” over “H. ASTON.” The “US” stamping is a little thin. Behind the hammer is “MIDDTN / CONN / 1852” in three lines. The trigger is blued and retains its original color. Hammer works properly holding at half and full cock and falling when the trigger is squeezed.
Overall the weapon has a very clean, sharp look to it that is pleasing to the eye. It should also be mentioned that all screw heads are in good condition as well and show no signs of wear.
These pistols were produced between 1845-1852.
