US NAVY CONVERSION OF THE COLT MODEL 1851 NAVY REVOLVER WITH HOLSTER

Item Code: 718-60

The serial numbers on this revolver are matching and fall within the known sequence of numbers for this model that were returned to the factory to be converted for US Navy use. The serial number is 61813.

Revolver is .38 caliber and has a 6-shot cylinder and a shortened 6.75 inch octagon barrel. The top of the barrel has a good single line stamping that reads “ADDRESS SAML COLT NEW YORK CITY.” The cylinder retains approx. 75% of the cylinder scene. It is also stamped with the serial number “59570” and underneath this number is the conversion number “1813” which matches the other numbers on the revolver. The loading lever was removed for the conversion exposing the underside of the barrel which is marked “R.W.M.” followed by an anchor. An ejection lever is mounted to the side of the barrel. The bore needs cleaning to get a good look at it. Rifling looks good but the surface dirt in the grooves makes it dark and hard to see details.

The frame has one large and two small screws. The two smaller screw heads show moderate wear with the larger one having only light wear. Forward of the screws are the markings “PAT. JULY 25, 1872” and “PAT. JULY 2, 1872.” These marking are placed one above the other and are stamped over the original patent mark from the original production.

The hammer has pin for use on center-fire cartridges and there is a loading gate on the right side of the breech. Hammer holds half-cock and cylinder turns halting on each stop. Hammer hold at full-cock and cylinder turns halting at each stop. Hammer falls correctly.

Grips are of varnished walnut with no inspector’s cartouche. The left grip has a carved “FR” while the right side has a carved five-pointed star and the letter “T.” The bottom of the grip frame is lightly stamped “U.S.N.”

The surface of the revolver retains about 60% of the original bluing with the rest showing light to moderate mottling. Grip strap and trigger guard are dark.

With the revolver is the original holster. The holster has been modified by cutting off the outer flap and a portion of the top of the body. There is a faint “US” in an oval stamped on the front of the body and the reverse is marked on the belt loop “ROCK ISLAND ARSENAL 190?” The plug at the base of the holster cylinder has a brass finial and ring. The seam stitching has split near the base of the cylinder for about 3.00 inches but the seam remains closed.

This is an interesting conversion in good condition and well-marked.
