English Whitworth cartridge. The cardboard tube cartridge was patented in 1859 and was of English manufacture. Inside is a paper-patched .45 caliber Whitworth bullet and beeswax wad. The bullet is a cylindrical bullet with cone cavity. The English Whitworth was a target rifle used during the war by sharpshooters. Only the Confederacy imported Whitworth rifles.
This specimen is broken in two halves. The patched bullet in one piece and the wax wad in the other. The powder charge has been removed. Could easily be repaired. A rarely encountered cartridge. [jet]
