REMARKABLE CONFEDERATE .58 CAL ORIGINAL UNOPENED ‘GARDNER’ PAPER CARTRIDGE

$695.00 SOLD

Item Code: M23814

Presented is an unopened Gardner-patent, Confederate .58 caliber paper wrapped cartridge in complete and intact original condition. This most desirable artifact is considered the very common type of CS ammunition which was used with rifled muzzleloaders during the Civil War. The Gardner patent minie ball employed a paper tube that was swaged into the base of a two groove (2-ring), hollow base lead bullet. The paper, formed into a column, was filled with black powder and closed by twisting the tail and laying it flat along the cylindrical case.

This .58 caliber minie ball with its accompanying powder charge was arsenal-made and is still encased and tightly wrapped within the original white-colored (now dirty tan) paper wrap. The paper wrap or column is remarkably intact with no tears, rips or perforations evident; paper exhibits just light surface soiling. The exposed conical shaped lead bullet has acquired the smooth, dark gray hue and paper is tightly wrapped at its base. A rare and seldom-seen specimen of the Confederate standard rifled musket ammunition in mint condition.

A superb and intact original example of .58 cal paper cartridge minie ball carried during the war by a many a Confederate infantryman. Comes in its own plastic tube for display.
