The most famous, single-shot, percussion firearm used during the Civil War was the Sharps carbine, a .52 caliber, breechloading firearm invented and patented by Hartford, Connecticut native Christian Sharps. Presented here is an example of the New Model 1859 Sharps carbine that was converted to use centerfire cartridges and features serial #53276.
Carbine has a 21½” long round barrel and a ‘straight-breech’ type lockplate. No barrel address and only very faint traces of “NEW MODEL 1859” stamped to rear of sight. All wood is good. The forestock is original to the gun and has nice walnut color and finish. The shoulder stock was replaced when converted. No cartouches. All gunmetal is in very good condition. Bluing has turned to a smooth plum patina overall and finish is smooth. The sling bar has a break and there is no ring. Original butt plate features cut-out for patch box, but replacement stock that was added during conversion was not cut for patch box. Patent stamps on lockplate are clear and distinct. Serial number stamped onto the receiver tang. Breechblock operating lever mechanics operate smoothly. Hammer / trigger mechanics are crisp. Bore is good with rifling.
This New Model 1859 Sharps conversion would be a good “shooter”. [jet]
