This Civil War shoulder arm is an original Colt Model 1861 ‘Special’ musket made under government contract from 1861 to 1865 by the Colt Manufacturing Co. of Hartford, Connecticut. Though no serial numbers were used in the production of the M1861 Special musket, records indicate that some 100,000 such muskets were produced during that period with many supplied for various state sub-contracts.
Longarm, which is in excellent condition, is a .58 caliber, single-shot muzzleloader fitted with the standard 40” round barrel and three barrel bands. The lockplate surface is a light mixture of gray and patina with no original case colors. Lockplate markings are the standard Colt Special with “U. S. / COLTS’ Pt F. A. Mfg Co / HARTFORD, CT”. Dated “1863” in strong clear numerals behind the hammer. Nice spreadwinged eagle bolster below the nipple. Barrel surface appears to have been cleaned long ago and wears a pleasing, gray finish mottled overall with just few scattered areas of light peppery oxidation. Barrel markings shows sharp, distinct proof marks “V / P/ Eaglehead” on the barrel breech facet and a sharp matching date “1863” on the barrel tang. Exhibits the standard two leaf rear sight and screw type barrel bands. Sling swivels at the trigger guard and the upper band.
Black walnut stock is in very good, untouched condition and shows scattered minor dents, dings and gouges consistent with age and use. Upper tip of stock at nose cap has old silvers gone from the ramrod groove. Wood flat opposite the hammer shows two government inspector cartouches in addition to light dings and dents. Lock screws all original and not buggered up. Mechanics are strong and crisp. Bore is shiny bright but thin. All the other iron components very good plus. Small inspector’s stamp on certain components as well as at the stock heel. An excellent Model 1861 Colt Special musket.
