BRITISH PATTERN 1853 ENFIELD CAVALRY SABER

$1,800.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 697-49

This original English Pattern 1853 cavalry saber and matching metal scabbard is an unmarked specimen. Saber is in very good overall condition and measures 35¼” long with a total length of 40½”. Bright blade is just slightly curved, has a 24½” long wide unstopped fuller, and is void of any etching. Blade retains about 80% of its original polished brightness with slight patches of minor light discoloration. Has two small dots and a “V” stamped on the reverse ricasso. Large, flat, iron hilt features a wide, flat knucklebow with a two-branch counterguard and a quillon terminating in a flat disc. Entire hilt wears a dark bronze colored patina and has the two-piece grips of original, checkered leather strips riveted to the blade tang with five iron rivets. Right side leather grip strip shows erosion or scuffing for 2” up from the pommel. Hilt is tight with no repairs on the branches or quillon. Retains its original washer pad.

Original, large, heavy iron scabbard with its wide collar is in very good condition with a dark gray, mottled patina overall. Scabbard is unmarked save for a modern paper tag with a typed note taped to the exterior body between the mounts and reads: “Confederate cavalry saber / made by Isaacs Campbell & Co”. Note likely spurious. Scabbard body exhibits a smooth hard surface that shows scattered light pinprick pitting. Scabbard has two ring mounts that are tight and each secures a 1 1/8” diameter iron sword ring. Throat collar has only one small setscrew. Scabbard shows two slight dents just above the drag area and light wear. This Pattern 1853 Enfield saber and scabbard represents a specimen that a Confederate cavalryman might have used in service during the Civil war.

This coat is the epitome of a Civil War Union general’s field uniform, a blouse following the popular sack coat pattern of the period, looking somewhat like an enlisted man’s fatigue blouse and suitable for campaign wear, but with a double row of… (1179-281). Learn More »
