The drawn saber meas. approx. 41.50 inches from point to pommel. The blade meas. approx. 35.50 inches long and is approx. 1.25 inches wide at the ricasso. Blade has a 26.50 inch stopped fuller and a narrow fuller above it that is approx. 18.50 inches long. Surface has been lightly cleaned so it is bright with only very light scattered mottling. True edge has one moderate sized nick. Obverse ricasso is marked “US” and A.D.K.” while the reverse is marked “AMES MFG. CO. / CABOTVILLE / 1850.” Leather washer is intact.
The hilt has a black leather covered grip with twisted wire wrap that is in excellent condition. The leather shows very little wear and the twisted wire wrap is 100% intact. The brass pommel cap, knucklebow and counterguard have a nice light patina and nothing is loose. Top of pommel is stamped twice with inspector’s initials “J.W.R.” and “A.D.K.” also in this area is stamped “CAPT. ROBINSON.” The flat side of the brass knucklebow has several stampings. The first are the letters “MS” for Massachusetts followed by the numbers “5” and “21.” The edge of the counterguard also bears a very small “59.”
The iron scabbard was nickeled at some point and there are areas where the finish is coming off which is usual. Mostly around the mounts and drag. There is one small dent approx. 5.00 inches up from the drag but this is slight. Both mounts and rings are present. The obverse side of the throat has a raised semicircle stamped with the number “49.” These types of marks are often found on state contract Model 1840 sabers. Drag also bears a faint inspector’s mark of “A.D.K.”
Efforts to identify Captain Robinson have been unsuccessful.
A very interesting example. [ad]
