The blade, measuring 27” long, is scaled down as is the scabbard. These small swords are quite scarce. Etchings are also scaled down to fit the blade which is just under 1” wide. Etchings include an eagle perched atop a naval deck gun, a fouled anchor, riband with “USN”, oak leaves and acorns, a large panoply of arms with flag with “USN”, an oval of stars; all etchings very fine. The ricasso is also marked “K & C” for C. R. Kirschbaum of Solingen, the blade maker.
The back seamed black leather scabbard has top & middle mounts with rope knots. The drag has the usual dolphin. All brass has been cleaned and it appears a light coat of varnish applied. The white sharkskin covered grip is excellent, with fancy twisted wire wrap. The underside of the guard with the usual “USN” among oak leaf/acorn castings. Pommel with normal eagle and stars.
Overall a very nice example of this difficult to find sword. [ss]
