BRITISH PATTERN 1853 CAVALRY SABER

$750.00 SOLD

Quantity Available: None

Item Code: 801-05

This fighting weapon is an original English Pattern 1853 heavy cavalry saber similar to those blades manufactured by a number of British firms. The Confederacy purchased swords and sabers in limited quantities from London sword makers who supplied military goods only to the South, and this specimen could likely come from one of those makers.

This Pattern 1853 cavalry trooper’s saber, a common imported edged piece, is completely void of stampings on the blade, hilt, pommel or the iron scabbard. The 34½” long blade is almost straight and void of any etching but does feature a single, unstopped 26” long fuller on either side. Both ricassos are unmarked. Entire blade still retains its shiny bright appearance with just hints of light scattered rub marks and light discolorations on both flats. Edge is very good with only two minor nicks.

Flat iron-mounted knucklebow is joined by the two branches at the oval counterguard that terminates in a quillon ending in a flat-sided disc. Entire hilt wears a dark brown / plum colored patina and exhibits black grips of checkered leather riveted to the tang of the blade with five small rivets. Leather is good but shows some shrinkage along the edge facing the knucklebow. Hilt is tight and shows light wear from age and use. Iron pommel exhibits an unadorned single-domed cap.

The original iron scabbard is in very good condition and exhibits a mottled brown rust colored patina overall. The unadorned scabbard, which is strong and tight, has dark oxidation areas on a smooth hard surface with light pitting evident. Scabbard has two ring mounts that are tight and each secures a 1” diameter iron ring. Throat collar retains both small set screws. Scabbard shows two small dents near the drag but is otherwise nice.
