Maker-mark: Schuyler, Hartley & Graham. Import-mark mark: [French] “Chattellerault”. Assembler mark: “B.F.D.”, for “Backes-Delacour”, a Paris firm which used Klingenthal blades in swords assembled for the American/Union Army market [stamped on counter-guard]. Standard diamond-shaped blade measuring 31.5” in length, .75” in width at the hilt. Identical obverse and reverse etchings [floral patterns above and below military trophies.] Markings and etchings exhibit light wear. Semi-bright blade displays patches of light pitting & a few very minor dings. Small washer trace present.
Gilt hilt assembly symmetrical and reasonably tight. Brilliant patina with excellent fish-skin grip & brass-twist wrap. Flexible counterguard latch broken. Magnificent blackened scabbard with bright gilt drag, carrying mounts and throat, with slight traces of pitting near drag. Else VG, with handsome scabbard and hilt. In all, superb display piece.
