This example of an original, M1840 heavy cavalry saber and scabbard was imported by the Philadelphia firm of William Horstmann. Blade shows the maker’s address on the obverse ricasso of “HORSTMANN’S” over “PHILA.” Reverse ricasso has a single stamp “B.” Blade exhibits a smooth, bright shiny appearance and free of pitting overall. Blade edge is free of nicks and shows no evidence of sharpening. Retains the original leather washer.
Pommel cap of the Phrygian helmet design bears an inspector’s mark “X” on the brim. Walnut grips are wrapped with black bridle leather that is dry with just minor light scuffing in two spots. Double twist brass wire remains tight but the last three strands have been replaced at the pommel area. Hilt is uncleaned brass with its knucklebow, quillon and two-branch guard and exhibits a bronze patina. Hilt is tight to the tang. Both branches are symmetrical and not bent.
Metal scabbard wears a medium gray patina and is undented. Ring mounts are tight and secure two 1½” diameter rings. Drag shows no wear. A very nice M1840 cavalry saber.
