The Faschinenmesser (Fascine Knife) is a metal handled short sword issued to foot troops to be used as a tool for fortification construction, or last ditch personal weapon for protection. The practice of an Infantry edged weapon (beyond the issue socket bayonet) dates back at least to the early 18th Century and an assortment of types were used by many European nations of the era. Developed no doubt as an additional weapon/tool to complement the cumbersome, slow firing, muzzle loading muskets then in universal service. The German states displayed a particular fondness for these sidearms, even after the development and issue of the new rapid firing, breech loading weapons. However period photographic evidence shows many of these saw active service with the Kaisers armies up to and including WWI.

This specimen measures nearly 24” overall, with an 18 ¾” iron blade. This hefty blade has a flat spine on top. Marked at the ricasso “P.D.L.” in an oval. Iron is semi bright with patchy dark spots. Cast brass hilt with plain cross guard. Handle is also plain terminating in a downward facing bulb. Brass has nice age patina.

Leather scabbard is complete with brass mounts. Leather is rigid and without folds or breaks. Much if not all of the stitching is split. Sheet brass throat retains its belt stud. The scabbard tip is slightly loose and has two “stab” holes in bottom where blade point has penetrated. Overall a very nice specimen.  [jet]
