This accouterment is an original M1855 Civil War saber bayonet most used with the M1841 percussion rifle, commonly called the ‘Mississippi Rifle’ from its affiliation with Jefferson Davis’ regiment during the Mexican War. This is the second type of bayo used with these rifles and was produced at the Harper’s Ferry Arsenal between 1855 and 1857. The total length of this brass-hilted saber bayonet is 27½” long while the blade itself is 22¼” long. Bayonet’s lines are simple and direct as the bayonet was primarily intended for issue to the Federal infantryman. Bayonet’s fullers are stopped. No maker’s mark and no stampings found.
The 4¾” long, all-brass cast hilt is secured on the tang by a single transverse steel pin through the guard. Has the spring-loaded thumb mechanism that secures the bayo to the rifle’s muzzle ring. Ribbed brass grip area displays an uncleaned, bronze patina. Flat upper grip area unstamped. Blade surfaces are heavily darkened with rust oxidation and rust pitting. No original bright finish. This original American Civil War saber bayonet makes a fine display to any bayonet collection.
