This accoutrement is an original, angular socket bayonet made for the US Flintlock Musket Model 1808 and possibly a transition bayo for the Model 1812 longarm. The triangular blade style is of the M1795 but the bayonet has a thicker neck configuration like the Model 1808 or the Model 1812 bayonet. Bayonet exhibits a spear shape and has no locking ring at the socket. This specimen is 18 5/8 ” long overall with a 15” long blade. Has a 3¼” long socket and a clear “JBUS” is stamped into the flat shank. The letters “JB” are slightly smaller and likely identify the government inspector. Blade bears a mottled gray finish with scattered areas of dark oxidation and peppery pitting overall. No edge nicks. Blade has a 6½” long narrow crude flute at the tip area.
