The M5 was the last type of bayonet issued with the M1 Garand and was made specifically for it. Instead of a muzzle ring, the upper guard has a rear-facing stud that fits a recess in the gas cylinder lock plug of the rifle, a system that was patented in late 1955, thus slightly postdating the Korean War, but qualifying for inclusion in an early Vietnam War collection. The M5-1 designation reflects an improvement in the latching system. The 6 5/8 inch blade is excellent and has all of its black Parkerized finish. The checkered black plastic grips are excellent as well, with no chips or cracks. The scabbard is the correct M8A1, marked “PWH.” This was an improved version of the M8 scabbard, originally developed for use with the M3 knife, originally having a shorter web drop and only a loop for wear on a pistol belt. The M8A1 lengthened the drop and added a wire belt hook. The scabbard, like the bayonet is excellent, with good color on the web and the plastic scabbard body, and comes with its original lace tie-down strap.
This would be tough to upgrade for condition. [sr]
