Remington made all the bayonets for the Winchester-Lee 1895 6 mm straight-pull rifles, but not all are marked. This one has the “Remington Arms Co. Ilion N.Y.” stamp in the fuller on the blade reverse. The rifle was the primary issue long arm of both the US Navy and Marine Corps from 1895 to 1900. The first navy contract in 1898 included some 1,800 for the Marine Corps and about a third of these saw action with the Marines who were the first to land and come under fire in Cuba. A second navy contract for 5,000 put even more into the hands of sailors who would form naval landing parties that fought along side Marines in many of the “little wars” in the Philippines, China, and elsewhere.
This example rates very good with a bright blade that has some scattered darker gray and brown spots, along with a few scratches and signs of cleaning on the obverse. The guard has scattered caramel brown areas and the pommel some deeper gray and brown spots. The grips have some scratches and some open grain on the reverse, but are tight to the metal and generally rate good. The scabbard is the Type II, which is black leather like the Type I, but with a small ball finial on the drag and belt loop that is stitched most of the way up each side to admit just the brass wire double hook device to attach it to the belt. The black leather body of the scabbard is excellent, as are the throat and tip. The leather belt loop is very good, shows more brown than black in color and has some minor abrasions to the edges and top fold. The brass wire belt hook is missing. [sr]
