Dating about 1890, this halberd testifies to the popularity of Old World art and architecture to newly prosperous Americans from about 1870 to 1920 who hoped some of the sheen of old aristocracy would rub off on them. European aristocrats, fallen upon hard times, were on the other side of the equation: willing to part with family heirlooms for hard cash. Antique arms were necessary to decorate our new baronial halls and when original pieces ran short there were plenty of craftsmen and dealers willing to supply the need. Measuring about 68.5 inches overall, this is a good copy of a European halberd that likely graced the entry hall of a large estate, perhaps along the Hudson, on Long Island, or even in the mid-west, where owning a steel mill might tie in nicely with an interest in armor. The head is cast in one piece, with double-edge spear-point blade, ax for cutting, and a hook that might drag a mounted knight out of his saddle. The shaft is nicely contoured, square in cross-section with beveled edges, and has been given a ball finial instead of a butt-cap on the bottom, but has been fitted with two metal strips descended from the head, which on originals would hinder an opponent from simply slicing off the weapon’s head. This now has a nice patina of age. The head is a mix of brown and gray. The shaft has a nice old coat of blackish-green paint showing appropriate wear. This would still look great in library room or an entry way, on the wall or leaning in a corner ready for the guard to turn out.  [sr]
