Three page handwritten letter dated Philadelphia, December 21, 1862. Letter is written in strong period ink on plain white paper that meas. approx. 7.75 x 9.75 inches. Paper has one vertical and three horizontal folds. Vertical fold is weak and beginning to separate.
The letter was written by a S. S. Huber to his brother Abram. S. Huber is at school and writes to his brother about his studies and hard work. He mentions how much he enjoys studying late at night. He also discusses the approach of Christmas and how his brother would find so many things in the city to amuse him.
At the bottom of the first page he says “YOU SAID THAT THE ELECTION WENT ALL ONE WAY. SO IT DID AND A LITTLE MORE SO. FOR FATHER ABRAHAM HAS CALLED AGAIN FOR 300,000 MORE.” He then continues “SO MARK HARMONY IS BACK AGAIN. THE REBS SHOT HIM DID THEY? BUT HE’S IN GOOD PLUCK AND WONT MIND IT MUCH.”
The letter ends with Huber asking his brother to tell his Father to send more money by Adams Express. [jp]
