This unmarked specimen from an unknown maker exhibits a diamond-shaped, double-edged 11 3/4" long steel blade. Typical of some other style Confederate pikes, the blade on this specimen is straight from the ricasso to the 'spear' point. A brass 1½" long, oval guard rests at the base of the blade. Two, 15 1/2" long iron straps extend down the side of the staff from the base of the blade and the ferrule. The straps attached to the wood with 6 rivets on each side. All metal exhibits scattered rust oxidation and wears a dark brown rust patina overall.
The wooden shaft or pole measures 76 3/4" long and is 1 1/4" in diameter. The well seasoned, straight, wood shaft is solid and strong. No cracks or breaks are visible. The bottom is a 7" cast iron piece that starts at 1 ¼" diameter and tapers to 1". This original 'Richmond-style' Confederate pike is a fine collector artifact and certain to enhance any Civil War relic collection or edged weapon display. This artifact is from the Rosensteel collection.
