US/CS REBUILT TWELVE-POUND GUN CANISTER ROUND

$450.00 SOLD

Canister rounds for field guns are notoriously difficult to find. Solid or dud-shells and case-shot can be excavated, but when a canister round is fired there is nothing left of the tinned iron canister and the contents scatter. Even when a round was discarded intact, the tinned iron casing is not going to last long in the ground. This is a nice example of a canister round for a 12-lb gun assemble from excavated elements: the canister balls themselves, arranged in tiers, and the thick bottom plate and thinner top plate. The iron balls and plates have pitting overall, but have been coated to arrest further deterioration and the only defect is a small chip and short crack on the edge of the upper plate.

This is suitable for a display of CS or US artillery ammunition, and what advancing infantry would have to face in battle. In fact, having the internal balls exposed to view is more telling than a plain tinned-iron cylinder giving no notion of the contents.  [sr]
