This artifact is a fine condition specimen of an arsenal-marked, Union artillery gunner’s firing implement. Known as the ‘gunner’s level’, the brass device was utilized by Federal military and naval gunners for sighting the artillery piece. The gunner would elevate or depress the cannon tube to a convenient position for loading. With his level, a device with an integral spirit level, he determined the high point of the base ring and marked the point with chalk for use in aiming the piece with a breech sight or tangent sight. Later when permanent marks on the base ring of heavy weapons fried from low level platforms and with improved sighting equipment rendered this level unnecessary.

Constructed of heavy brass, this tool bears the crisp maker’s markings of “U.S. / WATERTOWN / ARSENAL / 1862” below an eagle. The device, of heavy, one-piece finely milled brass, is in the shape of a modified pincer with a handle. Measures 6.5” in height, 6.25” across base. The level is in very good condition with a uniform patina and some light scratches. Reverse water bubble fully functional.

A fine, original, Civil War dated, arsenal-marked, brass gunner level to complement any artillery collection.  [AD]
