Buff leather thumb stall to be used by artillerymen for plugging the vent of a hot cannon barrel when it is swabbed. Blocking the vent prevents air from being sucked into the barrel through the vent hole and reigniting hot embers from the previous shot.
The thumb of the artillerymen’s hand slides into the top of this buff leather item and rests on top of a thick pad to protect the thumb from the hot surface of the barrel. The rest of the leather follows down the length of the thump and two ties anchor it securely to the wrist.
This item is full length and has both ties. It meas. approx. 6.00 inches long with a good thick pad at top. Both ties are present and meas. approx. 10.25 inches long.
Aside from some light surface dirt from age and use the item is in excellent condition.
