Fez is constructed out of one piece of red felt and meas. approx. 6.50 inches high x 6.50 inches wide across the bottom. The bottom of the fez is folded back on itself for 3.50 inches.
The body of the fez is in excellent condition and the orange / red color is consistent throughout. There is some light surface dirt but nothing major. There are some small moth nips but these are very minor. The only moth bite is on one side at the bottom edge. This area is very small.
Attached to the top of the fez is a knot of dark royal blue silk threads forming a tassel. Threads have retained their color and are approx. 6.50 inches long. The bottom of the fez is bound in an orange wool. This binding is in excellent condition except where the above described moth action touches it.
There is no lining or sweatband on the interior and there never was one.
The 9th New York Infantry also known as “Hawkin’s Zouaves” was raised in New York City on May 4, 1861 for two years. The regiment in South Carolina before becoming part of Burnsides’ 9th Army Corps. The regiment was heavily engaged at Antietam and took part in the Fredericksburg Campaign. In April of 1863 they saw service in Suffolk, Virginia before being mustered out on May 20, 1863. During its service the regiment lost 4 officer’s killed and died of wounds or disease and 92 enlisted men to the same.
Any uniform item relating to Zouave units is rare and this one being of the pattern worn by the 9th New York Zouaves and being a museum quality example, adds to its desirability. [ad]
